10 Easy Steps to Make ‘Plarn’

In just 2 minutes, you can create a material to easily reuse your plastic bags in amazing ways! Short for plastic yarn, “plarn” can be made by tying plastic ribbons together. Plarn can be used for all sorts of knitting/crochet crafts. The major benefits being that anything you create will very durable and waterproof.

Here’s how you can make it.

Supplies:

  • A handful of highly reusable and 100-percent-recycable plastic bags
  • Scissors

Step 1: Lay out a plastic bag, straighten any wrinkles

Step 2: Fold in half, handle to handle

Step 3: Fold in half again, same direction as previous

Step 4: Cut off handles and the bottom seam of the bag

Step 5: Measure how wide you would like your strips to be. At least an inch is recommended.

Step 6: Cut into strips!

Step 7: Lay out the strips

Step 8: Take 2 strips, place one end on top of the other

Step 9: Pull through strip that’s under around the one on top

Step 10: Hold the first strip while pulling the other strip through into a knot

 

Continue these steps until you have the amount of plarn you want and roll it into a ball to use easily.
