Bag taxes have come to Maryland — Montgomery County now charges a nickel for each paper or plastic bag shoppers use at the store. That may be fine for Montgomery County, one of the richest areas in the entire country. But now your elected officials want to bring that tax to the entire state of Maryland, charging you for every plastic and paper bag you use at retail outlets and grocery stores. And they'll even let retailers keep a portion of the tax.

Speak up today. Tell your legislators NO to a Maryland-wide bag tax.

Dear Decision Maker:

I'm a Maryland resident and I'm disappointed to hear that the legislature is considering a statewide tax on paper and plastic bags with a kickback for retailers. Laws like these don't help clean up our environment or reduce litter -- they just hurt the people who least can afford an additional cost burden in these tough economic times.

A bag tax may not hurt Montgomery County residents, but not all Marylanders are able to absorb yet another misguided tax. In some parts of Maryland, more than 15% of the population is below the poverty line. Passing a tax like this would add an unnecessary burden to Maryland's poorest residents in a down economy -- and punish anyone who chooses 100% recyclable plastic bags at the store. What's even worse is that a bag tax directly threatens Maryland manufacturing jobs, while doing nothing to help the environment.

I hope you'll oppose this unneeded legislation. Please focus on laws that help Maryland's families instead of taxing them -- for instance, by encouraging even more people to recycle.
