In Maryland's Assembly, some politicians are proposing a new law. It wouldn't create new jobs or improve schools -- it would charge Prince George's County residents for every paper and plastic checkout bag they use. This regressive tax is both misguided and unnecessary. It disproportionately harms the County's poorest residents and those who are on a fixed income -– like our senior citizens. At a time when so many families are hurting and so many other important issues are at stake -– including rising transportation, housing and food costs –- it's hard to believe some politicians actually want to raise grocery costs on Prince George's County residents when they can least afford it.
Passing a tax like this would add an unnecessary burden to the County's working families in a down economy -- and punish anyone who chooses 100% recyclable plastic bags at the store. What's even worse is that a bag tax directly threatens Maryland manufacturing jobs and will do nothing to help the environment.
Tell your state legislators today to support the families of Prince George's County who need it most by voting NO on bag taxes.
