Is Chicago’s Plastic Bag Ban Effective?

A year after implementation, things are not looking too good for bag ban advocates in Chicago, Il. While advocates insisted a ban on highly reused and recyclable plastic bags would help benefit the environment, the results actually show the opposite. According to Chicago Magazine, there may be less bags being distributed in the city, but thicker bags are being used.

This amounts to twice as much plastic usage as before.

While it may come as no surprise that Chicago is just the latest example of a failed plastic bag ban, it is a lesson that must be learned for other municipalities considering the misguided legislation: Plastic bag bans do not work.
